GOOD SPACE inspires and uplifts communities by championing the creation, fostering and presentation of innovative endeavours, practices, projects, ideas and interactions spread throughout reclaimed spaces, with all the shared benefits that come with it. Sick of ‘Business as Usual’ GOOD SPACE have rallied together as a dedicated and talented collective of philosophically aligned individuals and organisations, who see a need for Sydney’s diverse progressive cultural communities to unite to create something unique and viable that we can all be proud of.
GOOD SPACE works as a united, proactive movement to influence the very fabric and future of Sydney, transforming it into a city that embraces creativity, culture, innovation, equality, community, diversity, inclusivity, and celebration. They won't stop until they achieve their grand vision.
GOOD SPACE believes it is not only their purpose and passion but their responsibility, to support progressive creative and cultural enterprise through opportunities, community engagement, support and empowerment.
GOOD SPACE Is created by Good People who are championing Sydney's cultural revolution. It takes a lot of dedication from committed individuals to create a progressive, accessible, and viable cultural life in Sydney. This is exactly what the independent community-driven project, GOOD SPACE, aims to bring together.

GOOD SPACE does not base its viability on government funding, charity or by not valuing people for their time and experience. GOOD SPACE bases its viability on engaging the people and organisations that will benefit from its creation, to invest the time, money and resources to bring something that we know Sydney needs into reality.
GOOD SPACE is created, run and paid for by the people, for the people who benefit from its existence. An opportunity for contributors, partners, sponsors and investors to become part of a financially viable venture that aims to do good for its contributors, supporters, members, Sydney and the greater community, whilst having a significant impact on Sydney’s cultural future.
GOOD SPACE endeavours use a holistic model ensuring all the elements work together harmoniously to achieve the desired outcomes. By maximising the use of space and the hours of operation, and diversifying the income streams while sharing resources effectively in an effort to create an environment where nothing goes to waste, and ensure that the full potential of the project is realised.
Diversification of events, space, education, hospitality, retail and other offerings provide multiple income streams that generate capital from the get-go that feeds directly back to GOOD SPACE, the contributors, the community and the creative, cultural, and eco sectors. This holistic model is not only beneficial in the short term, but it also ensures long-term success and sustainability.
GOOD SPACE generates income via ticket, art, cafe and bar sales, shop and studio rentals, memberships, crowdfunding, sponsorship, impact investment, government funding and philanthropy so it is not reliant on one source of income. This is further augmented by minimising crossovers, resources and expenses, which allows for an operation that is both efficient and cost-effective. This diversification creates viability and profitability allowing for GOOD SPACE to thrive in uncertain times, whilst delivering large economic benefits for all.
GOOD SPACE collaborates with aligned partners and individuals to build community cohesion, create opportunities, offer encouragement and support, ensure fair pay, and raise funds for projects and development. They achieve this by sharing costs, space, opportunities, skills, knowledge, responsibilities, resources, networks, and promotion. They collaborate rather than compete with potential allies to transform Sydney into a supportive and diverse place with stronger communities and industries.
GOOD SPACE's inaugural festival at The Rocks in 2021 generated a direct return on investment of 1500%, securing $150k in revenue. It created employment opportunities for hundreds of contributors and successfully reduced, recycled, or redeemed 90% of its waste. It had a significant impact on revitalising The Rocks in the aftermath of Covid-19, and that was only the first year. Alongside Covid, rising rental prices, negative media and perceptions, the lock-out laws, the shrinking funding and government support for the cultural, progressive, environmental, small business and education sectors, Sydney has become increasingly unaccommodating for the cultural industries. As challenging as these issues are, the current state of Sydney also creates opportunities.
There is a crucial need to develop new, sustainable business models that respond to the needs of the creative and cultural industries and enable them to adapt, survive, and thrive. Sydney can better serve its cultural and creative communities, and by doing so, it can grow into a truly world-class, vibrant, sustainable, and liveable city.
The creative and cultural sectors play a vital role in developing and sustaining society and its diverse communities, helping them thrive not only financially but also emotionally, mentally, and physically. They should serve as a cornerstone for the development of a vibrant Australia.
Australia’s rich creativity and culture should be accessible and beneficial to everyone, regardless of their abilities, gender, race, social status, background or experience. A progressive, stable society creates a sustainable economy by investing in opportunities for independent creative, cultural and community initiatives or individuals.
There is a crucial need to have opportunities to create, connect and experiment with arts, creativity and culture – creativity is not only for the elite and well-heeled, so it should not be subject to “gate-keeping” by the elite, governments or commercial interests. If a person wishes to contribute to our society by creating or experiencing creativity and culture, there must be a means for them to do so.
Grassroots changes can bring about systemic changes. Nurturing talent and ideas from the ground up and supporting the growth of creative communities is crucial. New ideas and talent need to be cultivated over time – start small, start local, and grow organically into something unique, viable, successful and beneficial that gives back to Sydney and society, creating a lasting legacy.
There are creative solutions to all problems. By looking at them from alternative perspectives, we can put them into action. A better understanding of what has come before, as well as new shifts and systems in nature and society, can help create new, holistic approaches to our shared problems.
Now is the time to open up and nurture spaces for community, creativity and culture. Sydney’s creative communities lack the right spaces to thrive and grow, due to lack of access, outdated regulations and affordability. Healthy and affordable creative spaces are essential to the growth and viability of a city and the health of its residents and visitors.
It is GOOD SPACE‘s mission to make its vision a reality. They remain optimistic that by working together They will all make a difference. GOOD SPACE believes it’s time to take action to bring about meaningful change in our city and society creating a future that we can all be proud of.

Free from the norms of beige, naysayers, boxes, borders, and hard edges, all curious minds of different shapes, sizes, and colours are welcome to explore and attend GOOD SPACE as they please in the spirit of community and exchange.
GOOD SPACE rethinks the audience/ performer/ exhibitor dynamic, allowing art, life, music, culture, sustainability, food, drink and ideas to coalesce, whilst making a significant contribution to the local economy and society. At GOOD SPACE multidisciplinary networks coalesce, collaborate and co-mingle fostering creative exchanges which in turn cultivate an energy that is delightful and exciting for visitors to engage with and be a part of.
GOOD SPACE features a diverse selection of the best and brightest at all levels of their practice in the arts, music, cultural, design, education, performance, health, social enterprise and environmental sectors attracting a large, diverse and dedicated community to their unique and innovative spaces.
People experience something genuinely memorable and wowing whilst at GOOD SPACE; connect with others and help to create a viable and sustainable model for creativity, culture, environment and community at the same time.
The multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural nature of GOOD SPACE means that audiences not only encounter creativity and culture that reflects their experiences but also discover new artistic media, creators, and stories that resonate with them. This deepens their individual connection to our collective cultural experience, encouraging them to seek cultural experiences that are "just right" for them.
At GOOD SPACE guests are able to enjoy new experiences, make new friends, purchase artisan goods from local creators, listen to a talk, have a dance, watch art in the making, sip a cocktail, learn a new talent or enjoy a class act in one GOOD SPACE. A vibrant place to enter and then linger, to listen, laugh, learn, dance, eat, drink, connect, collaborate, chill, try your hand at some making–or just watch others do their thing–and then come back and do it all over again another day.

GOOD SPACE would not have been possible without the support of everyone who turned up to participate and our many collaborators. Together, we used a grassroots vehicle to cocreate a new model to enable Sydney’s cultural and environmental renaissance.
Over the 2-month activation, more than 300,000 engaged with us online, and 7,000 people experienced GOOD SPACE first hand.

People of all ages, interests and walks of life participated with over 100 communities and cultures represented, more than 75% came from outside the Metropolitan area. Truly an activation for all ages ranging from 0 to 90 and the average age of 25 to 55. GOOD SPACE was a diverse, family-friendly and safe place in all senses of the term.

We played and danced the days and nights away in times when most of the world could not. We boosted wellness and happiness, strengthening social connections and Sydney’s economy in a time when it was crucial.
We created a once in a lifetime experience that transformed a vacant and highly underutilised building and park on the harbour into a revolutionary 2-month community-led pop-up festival celebrating Sydney’s Arts, Culture, Environment and People.
The highly successful GOOD SPACE proved that community-led projects strengthen the economy, culture, communities and revitalise cities. We are grateful for the support of the Collaborators, the City of Sydney, the NSW government and other stakeholders.
Thank you to everyone who contributed and participated. Together we celebrated and reignited Sydney’s Arts, Cultural, Environmental and Hospitality sector and brought life and happiness back into our city.

GOOD SPACE EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS,
A RAY OF SUNSHINE IN CLOUDY TIMES
GOOD SPACE provided a home, support and platform for more than 30 events, workshops, talks and other activities. It featured more than 250 creatives, environmentalists and others from over 100 different communities and cultures providing them with a desperately needed space to do what they do best and make a living at the same time.
Armed with only a $600 promotion budget, GOOD SPACE used an organic grassroots campaign to attract over 7000 people to come together from all walks of life in the heart of the CBD to experience the best of life, community and our city when it was crucial.
On a $10k budget, GOOD SPACE showcased a new progressive model for arts, culture and environmental practice. Events held in the GOOD SPACE generated more than $150k directly into the arts, culture, environmental, hospitality and community sectors at a 1500% direct return on financial investment.
We also sold thousands of dollars worth of artworks, artisan goods, fashion pieces, environmental products and other beautiful things by local individuals and businesses who desperately needed exposure and an income.
The landmark location of GOOD SPACE at The Rocks in the heart of Sydney CBD helped activate the area, bring large crowds and delivered economic benefits for local businesses.
We sorted all rubbish and recycled, redeemed and composted more than 90% for the entire two month period. GOOD SPACE then donated all proceeds from the redemption of cans to Transition Sydney, a not-for-profit environmental organisation.
And we connected and strengthened bonds between a diversity of stakeholders in the arts, cultural, environmental, hospitality, Government, services and community sectors, enabling future collaborations, opportunities and a once in a lifetime chance to turn Sydney into what we know it can and should be.

Cultural participation & representation is the core mechanism for strengthening ties between individuals & communities 

Covid-19 has wrought havoc on our collective social connection, though, ironically, it is also one of the few things that literally every Australian has personal experience of. As we emerge from two years of the pandemic, the time is ripe for celebrating our shared humanity with positivity and joy.

During the GOOD SPACE Festival activation periods, employment has been generate for hundreds of people and organisations from the arts, cultural, environmental, social enterprise, hospitality, production, retail and service sectors at a time when employment opportunities in those sectors are drastically needed.

Opportunities for creatives who are not part of the conventional cultural milieu to move further into professional practice are rare. GOOD SPACE promotes art/culture as a legitimate career and industry to the wider community and will embrace digital platforms to promote the work of the artists to the rest of Australia and the world. It also provides significant opportunities for cross-population of skillsets and collaborations.

GOOD SPACE believes an important part of the sustainability of our cultural industries is not just finding fresh ideas from hitherto ignored voices, but also offering professional assistance to produce their work and to empower them to recreate that process.

Securing Equity: GOOD SPACE actively seeks out artists from all backgrounds. The team is aware of issues of cultural sensitivity when working with a diverse group of performers, and places the artist at the centre of the conversations of how the work should proceed.

Pays its contributors. 70% of all ticket and art sales go back to the original creator and production, personnel and marketing costs are covered by GOOD SPACE.

Creates crucial connections between creators who would normally never be exposed to each other’s work or ideas.

Builds audiences for creators. GOOD SPACE attracts audiences as diverse as the artists, who will be exposed to art or performance they’ve never seen before. Creators will leave GOOD SPACE with new audiences.

Offers professional mentorship on production, as well as networking creators with producers, marketers and equipment hire companies.

Offers opportunities for genuine cross-cultural collaboration to create new work that is relevant, contemporary and globally connected.
